Police: Burglary suspect fatally shot in St. Clair County

LENZBURG, Ill. (AP) - A coroner has publicly identified a man who authorities say was shot and killed during an alleged southwestern Illinois home invasion.

The St. Clair County Coroner's Office says 31-year-old David Shemonia Jr. of New Athens died during the shooting Thursday night near Lenzburg.

Sheriff's Sgt. Matt Jany says dispatchers received a call from a man who reported someone was trying to break in to his house. He says the homeowner also told dispatchers that he had fired shots at the intruder.

Police say when they arrived, they found a person who had been fatally shot.

Sheriff's Capt. Scott Weymouth tells the Belleville News-Democrat (http://bit.ly/1ysgn9i ) that Shemonia "was familiar" with the homeowner, although the two were not related.

Weymouth says he had no additional details.

The homeowner was not injured.
