A 54-year-old Des Plaines woman died yesterday in a fire that fire officials say was caused by careless use of smoking materials. Diane Miner was found at about 9 a.m. by firefighters entering the burning house on the 400 block of Woods Road, on the city's east side. Full story.

Pedestrian hit, killed by truck in Des Plaines parking lot

A pedestrian was struck and killed by a truck yesterday afternoon in the parking lot of a Des Plaines strip mall, authorities said. The crash happened just after 2 p.m. near 767 W. Golf Road, in the Market Place Shopping Center, according to Fire Chief Alan Wax. Full story.

Cary police are looking for Kyle Cuchna, 21, who was last seen late Saturday evening at Cary United Methodist Church on First Street. He was wearing a dark blue jacket, blue jeans and black Converse shoes, police said. Full story.

Sheriff Kramer: I removed federal inmates for officers' safety

Kane County officials are facing the loss of about $1.4 million after a decision by the sheriff to boot federal inmates out of the county jail for corrections officers' safety. U.S. Marshals pulled 43 federal detainees out of the jail last week. The county's 2015 budget is partially based on $2.4 million of projected income from hosting the inmates this year, but Sheriff Don Kramer said the revenue is not worth officer burnout and the threat to their safety. Guilty verdict in 2012 armed robbery at Streamwood Aldi

Prosecutors argued that the strongest evidence against Freddie Clemons, one of three Chicago men charged with robbing a Streamwood Aldi at gunpoint, came from the four employee eyewitnesses to the 2012 holdup. The guilty verdict, which followed about 2½ hours of deliberations yesterday, suggested jurors agreed. Full story.

Lombard fire survivor testifies in murder, arson trial

Jason Cassidy testified yesterday during the first-degree murder trial of Todd Mandoline, who is accused of starting the fire that injured Cassidy and killed 24-year-old Paula Morgan. Cassidy, 27, of Villa Park, suffered from smoke inhalation and third-degree burns over 40 percent of his body after firefighters rescued him in the early morning hours of July 22, 2012. Full story.
