Batavia aims to start road resurfacing earlier

Resurfacing of Batavia streets could happen several months earlier this year.

The city will seek bids for its annual street program in February, with the goal of having the work start in late April and be finished in June.

In 2014, the contract was let in late August, and some of the work wasn't completed until mid-November.

Scott Haines, streets division superintendent, told the city council Tuesday that by letting the contract earlier in the year, he hopes to get better prices for the work.

Last year, the street program cost the city about $1.2 million.

The work would be minor resurfacing of streets, including some curb and gutter replacement and patching of driveway aprons.

Before the work is done, city workers will inspect sanitary and stormwater sewer lines, and make repairs before street construction begins.

Roads tentatively identified for minor resurfacing in are:

• Jefferson Street from Wilson Street to North Avenue;

• Illinois Avenue from Jackson Street to Republic Road;

• Harrison Street from Main Street to Walnut Street;

• Walnut Street to the city limits;

• Jackson Street from Wilson to First Street;

• Church Street from Prairie Street to Hamlet Street;

• College Street from Church Street to Spring Street;

• Bluestem Lane from Woodland Hills Road to Chillem Drive.
