Butterfield School students are archaeologists for a day in Libertyville

Second-graders at Butterfield Elementary School in Libertyville had a chance to handle fossils and bones during an in-school field trip Friday.

Melissa Siska, of High Touch High Tech, brought in artifacts, such as plant fossils, bison bones and molds of various dinosaur bones.

"We come in and offer an additional experience for them (the students)," Siska said. "They get the chance to be the scientist. They learn a little bit about what it's like being a scientist in addition to learning about the topic we are discussing."

Students used magnifying glasses to examine the artifacts and made plaster molds of the fossils. This field trip coincides with the dinosaur unit the second-graders are studying.

At the end of the program, students used brushes, like an archaeologist, to dig in sand as they looked for shark teeth. Each students was able to take home 10 shark teeth.
