Brunch to recognize conservation efforts in McHenry County

Join the Land Conservancy of McHenry County's annual Celebration Brunch from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 25, at D'Andrea Banquet in Crystal Lake.

The event will recognize another exceptional year of conservation in McHenry County - oak trees and native shrubs planted, acorns gathered, land preserved, Art of the Land celebrated - all through the generous support of the members and hard work of many dedicated and enthusiastic volunteers.

This year's featured speaker is Doug Elliott, who is a naturalist, herbalist, humorist and storyteller from Union Mills, NC. Elliott will take you on a journey through America's rural country as he performs a lively collection of tales, legends, stories, folklore and personal narratives.

In addition to the featured speaker, the celebration includes brunch, silent auction, raffle, recognition of our easement and land donors and presentation of awards.

Due to limited seating, tickets need to be bought in advance. Tickets are $35 for members and $50 for nonmembers. Tickets are available through Jan. 22 and will not be available at the door. You can purchase your tickets online at the website at www.conserveMC.org or by calling (815) 337-9502.

McHenry County's landscape is richly diversified. Its features range from glacial remnants such as kames, moraines, and outwash plains, to the more recent woodlands, prairies, stream corridors, bogs and fens.

Lifelong residents, as well as new residents, are attracted to McHenry County's special combination of small towns, natural areas, rural character and rural agricultural fields and farmsteads.

Since 1991, The Land Conservancy has helped protect more than 2,000 acres of McHenry County's prairies, wetlands and woodlands by working with private landowners, communities and other partners. They do this by direct acquisition of property (through purchase or donation), or the establishment of conservation easements. When they take such sites under their care, it is their intention that they will be protected on behalf of the community in perpetuity.
