Putnam County sheriff to display antique guns

HENNEPIN, Ill. (AP) - The Putnam County Sheriff's office in northern Illinois will soon display its collection of antique guns.

The (LaSalle) News Tribune reports (http://bit.ly/1xsS86Y ) that the county board this week approved $750 to purchase a secure display case for the weapons to be put in the sheriff's office lobby.

The collection including dueling pistols, German guns and a 1921 Thompson submachine gun. That gun has an interesting history. Putnam County Sheriff Kevin Doyle says it may have belonged to Granville businessman who was killed in a 1955 unsolved murder.

Previously the guns have been displayed in county treasurer Kevin Kunkel's office.
