Two charged in Mount Prospect shooting

A 22-year-old native of Yugoslavia and a 17-year-old have been charged in a shooting last week in Mount Prospect that prosecutors characterize as an attempt to rob participants in a drug buy.

Cook County Judge Joseph Cataldo on Wednesday set bail at $200,000 for Edham Salkic, of the 1200 block of Boxwood Drive in Mount Prospect, who was charged with attempted murder, attempted armed robbery and aggravated discharge of a firearm. Cataldo set an additional bail of $20,000 for Salkic, who has been charged with violating his bond in relation to a pending mob action case, said Assistant State's Attorney Maureen McGhee.

The 17-year-old co-defendant was not in bond court Wednesday.

Prosecutors say two accusers, ages 16 and 18, reported to police they were shot around 11 p.m. Jan. 6 in a parking lot on the 400 block of East Euclid Avenue in Mount Prospect. The two teens were in a car with a third person from whom they intended to buy marijuana, said prosecutors, describing the third person as a witness.

The teens told police Salkic approached the driver's side and the co-defendant approached the passenger's side of the car armed with handguns, prosecutors said. They said the defendants demanded marijuana. As the occupants of the car drove away, Salkic and the teen fired seven shots, five of which struck the vehicle, McGhee said.

The witness identified Salkic as one of the men who shot at the trio, prosecutors said, adding that the shooting was captured on video. Prosecutors say bullets recovered from the car matched bullets found at the 17-year-old defendant's home.

Salkic returns to court on Feb. 6.
