West Chicago continues healthy living push

As West Chicago and its community partners research and develop a Healthy West Chicago Action Plan, the community is discovering the power of working together.

Healthy West Chicago takes direct aim at the obesity epidemic through the efforts of more than 15 partners, as well as people who work and live in the city.

A survey of more than 580 West Chicagoans last summer showed most people believe healthy eating and an increase in exercise is extremely important (93 percent of respondents), but only 28 percent of respondents said West Chicago is a "healthy" or "very healthy" place to live.

Last fall and winter, 10 community forums invited parents, faith-based communities, the school district, seniors, and park district staff to share their ideas.

Ideas generated so far include enhancing and growing a farmers market and a community garden program. Others have suggested new ideas for adult recreational sports, including a new softball tournament between faith communities.

The community has an extensive bike trail network, but West Chicagoans say they want to integrate biking into everyday life by making it safer and easier to get to places around town, including downtown, schools and stores.

Another big idea: Encourage restaurants to showcase Mexican culture through healthy menu choices.

A final open forum will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 29, at the ARC Center, 201 W. National St. Everyone living or working in the community is invited. RSVPs are helpful but not necessary. Email jennifer@sevengenerationsahead.org for information.
