Local service organizations to host MLK Peace Fair

Chicago, IL - Martin Luther King Day has been long recognized across American as a "day on, not a day off," encouraging individuals to come together and honor their community and King's legacy. For Notre Dame AmeriCorps volunteers in Chicago, this is a very important and exciting weekend.

The volunteers will work alongside one of their partnering sites, Hope Junior, to host a Peace Fair for the East Garfield Park community. This is the second year that Notre Dame AmeriCorps and Hope Junior partner for the Peace Fair. Last year, more than 100 people attended the event. Families and children enjoyed arts and crafts projects, delicious lunch, games and fun for the whole family.

About Notre Dame AmeriCorps Chicago

Notre Dame Mission Volunteers places nearly 400 members at more than 160 partnering sites across 24 cities nationwide. Since partnering with AmeriCorps in 1995, Notre Dame Mission Volunteers has served more than 500,000 children and adults in tutoring programs, after-school programs, and GED preparation.

In Chicago, Notre Dame AmeriCorps team is comprised of 14 members who serve in schools and community centers on the West and South sides of Chicago. Members assist in classrooms, run after-school programs, teach adult ed classes, as well as complete several service projects throughout their year.

About Hope Junior

Marillac Social Center and Hope Junior are partners with Notre Dame AmeriCorps Chicago.

Hope Junior offers children and teens high-quality after-school program activities and opportunities during nonschool hours. The goal of Hope Junior is to provide youth with positive experiences at a young age that will translate into positive choices in the future.

The Hope Junior children attend local schools including: Octavia Paz, LEARN Charter, Calhoun, Jenson and Kellman.

During the program, students receive daily homework help as well as additional tutoring. Students also have an opportunity to participate in athletic activities, service projects, and several field trips throughout the year.
