Schaumburg firefighters play Santa, with community help

On Saturday, Dec. 6, the Schaumburg Firefighters Union sponsored its 24th annual Christmas shopping for the less fortunate of the community at the Target store at Schaumburg and Barrington roads.

Target opened its doors an hour early. The firefighters union adopted 12 families from Schaumburg Township and spent $5,000 purchasing presents, including clothing, toys, games, books, bedding and gift cards to Target, gas stations and grocery stores. The gifts were wrapped by the firefighters and their families along with fifth-graders from Hoover Elementary School in Schaumburg.

In addition, the Firefighters Union also donated a $5,000 check to the Schaumburg Township Food Pantry to restock shelves after the Thanksgiving holiday. The money was raised during the union's annual firefighter softball tournament, which has taken place in September, for the last 21 years. This year's tournament raised $40,000 and over the last 21 years has raised over $550,000. Most of this money has been donated to the Loyola University Burn Center.

The union would like to thank the 50 active and retired firefighters, their families, and now even grandchildren, for giving a Christmas to families who might not have had one. Without them, this would not be possible.
