Discover prairie plants for the home landscape U of I Extension Master Gardener Presents Feb. 11 Program

YORKVILLE, Ill. - Discover the possibilities of prairie plants for the home garden with University of Illinois Extension Master Gardener Mary Jo Murphy.

Murphy will present "Prairiescapes: Grow Native!" at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 11, at the University of Illinois Extension office in Yorkville.

The class will cover advantages of prairie plants in the home landscape, fundamentals of starting a new prairie bed, and how to incorporate them into an existing bed.

"In addition to learning about caring for these plants, participants also will explore why prairie plants have survived for 8,500 years," said Sarah Fellerer, Master Gardener and Master Naturalist Program Coordinator. "Through this sought-after presentation, home gardeners can learn how to be a part of preserving Illinois' heritage."

Murphy, of St. Charles, has been a Master Gardener for 28 years and earned the State Sustained Excellence Award in 2003. As an active member of the Master Gardener Speaker's Bureau, her native plant presentations are among the most requested. Her work can be seen each year at the Idea Garden's prairie and rain demonstrations plots.
