U-46, Dist. 302 school candidates get to stay on ballot

Four candidates for election to school boards in Elgin District U-46 and Kaneland District 302 will get to be on the April 7 ballot, as the Kane County electoral board Monday overruled objections to their petitions.

Brian Sauvageau of Bartlett will be allowed to run for one of the four 4-year terms on the U-46 school board.

Jerry Elliott and Dan Nagel of unincorporated Sugar Grove Township and Tony Valente of Sugar Grove will remain among the eight people seeking four, 4-year terms on the Kaneland board.

The Kaneland candidates' petitions had been challenged by three people running against them - current board members Teresa Graue Witt, Peter Lopatin and Gale Pavlak - and Lynn McHenry, a Kaneland High School teacher who is also a negotiator for the Kaneland Education Association.

They charged that the Elliott, Valente and Nagel had used the wrong form for their petitions - one that did not specify in what township they lived. Kaneland can't have more than three people from any township sitting on the board. The district extends in to nine townships.

In the Elgin case, two residents charged that Sauvageau had not circled a choice of city, village or unincorporated area in the address portion of several of his petition sheets, gave a wrong date for the election on two of the sheets, and gave a wrong date for notarization on one of the sheets.

Other challenges

The electoral board Monday conducted hearings on challenges to the election petitions of Scott Coryell, who is running for the Fox River and Countryside Fire/Rescue District board, and Gail Borden Library candidates Jean Bednar, Carlos Chavez, Herb Gross, Tiffany Henderson and Bonifacio Mondragon. It will issue rulings on those Thursday morning.
