Chicago women charged with felony credit card fraud

Two 27-year-old Chicago women were arrested Tuesday at the Batavia Wal-Mart and charged with using gift cards and PayPal cards that had been altered with someone else's credit card information, police said.

Charneice L. Chatman, of the 2100 block of West Gladys Street, and Antionette M. Jones, of the 2700 block of West Lexington Avenue, have been charged with the felonies of unlawful use of a credit card and altering a credit/debit card, along with misdemeanor retail theft.

Chatman faces an additional count of felony theft, according to police and Kane County court records.

They were arrested Tuesday at the Randall Road store after employees watched the women at the self checkout aisles swiping different cards while trying to make several purchases, police said.

Store employees called authorities and the women gave different stories, police said.

The account information on the credit cards did not match the credit card numbers on their receipts, and investigators found several dozen gift cards on the women that had been altered with someone else's credit card information, police said.

Both posted bond Wednesday morning and were released from jail, according to the sheriff's office.

They are both due in court Jan. 21 and face up to five years in prison if convicted. Probation also is an option.
