Schaumburg seminar focuses on children and adolescents with autism

Shelter Inc. will host a three-hour seminar on Friday, Jan. 23, at the Schaumburg Township District Library in the Adult Classroom, 130 S. Roselle Road, Schaumburg "Social Emotional Needs of the Child/Adolescent with ASD and Their Families: Effective Interventions."

This seminar will focus on the social and emotional needs of children and adolescents with autism, as well as effective therapeutic interventions for both the child and the family. There is no charge for the seminar and three continuing education credits will be given at no charge to licensed social workers and counselors in attendance. Seating is limited and the registration deadline is Monday, Jan. 19.

The seminar will feature speakers Maria G. Bellantuono, and Dr. Kelly M. Demers, from Alexian Brothers Behavior Health Hospital. Bellantuono currently serves as the clinical director of the Alexian Brothers Behavioral Health Hospital Autism Spectrum and Developmental Disorders Resource Center. She has over 10 years experience working with children on the Autism Spectrum. Dr. Demers currently serves as the psychologist for the Alexian Brothers Autism Spectrum and Developmental Disorders Resource Center. Her previous experience includes program supervisor and parent consultant for Creative Family Coaching in California and work with Autism Spectrum Therapies.

Shelter Inc. is a nonprofit child welfare agency that helps and protects abused and neglected children and adolescents by providing foster care, emergency and longer-term group home services in a safe and caring environment. Their Healthy Families Program provides home visits to first-time parents emphasizing children's well-being and positive parenting. Increased public awareness concerning child abuse, neglect and other social problems directly impacting children and their families is accomplished through their Community Education Program. Shelter's programs are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
