Report: Ex-Cub Bonifacio signs with White Sox

The White Sox are close to completing a deal with veteran infielder/outfielder Emilio Bonifacio, according to multiple reports

A 29-year-old veteran utility man, Bonifacio split the 2014 season with the Chicago Cubs and the Atlanta Braves. Although he struggled with the Braves, Bonifacio, a switch hitter, had a hitting line of .279/.318/.373 in 69 games with the Cubs. He was traded to Atlanta along with lefty reliever James Russell for cash and prospect Victor Caratini.

Jon Morosi of Fox Sports was the first to report the free-agent signing, and Jon Heyman of CBS Sports reported the one-year deal is worth $4 million. According to Bruce Levine of WSCR, the deal is for $3 million in 2015 with a $1 million buyout for 2016 or a club option for $4 million.

The White Sox, who are awaiting results of a physical, could give Bonifacio a shot at second base, where Micah Johnson and Carlos Sanchez are expected to compete.
