A Musical Shabbat Celebrating Peace is Among the Events Being Planned at Or Shalom

Among the upcoming festivities special events being held at Congregation Or Shalom, former board president and author Carol Miller Fradkin will discuss her new book, What Brings You Joy?, as part of the Friday night Shabbat service at 7:30 p.m. on January 9. Prior to the discussion, will be a Soup and Bread Winter Warm-up at 6 p.m. Fradkin's book will be available for purchase and signing that evening. RSVPs are requested and can be made by calling the temple office at 847-362-1948.

On Friday, January 23, a special young children's Simchat Shabbat service will be held at 6 p.m. At this service, children can be introduced to worship, meet other families. In addition, families can enjoy a story with the rabbi and schmooze and nosh at the oneg. Children with birthdays in January will be called to the bimah for a special rabbinical blessing and are encouraged to bring a new, unwrapped gift to donate to a child in need. In addition January anniversaries are being celebrated. Another Simchat Shabbat service will be held on Friday, February 13.

A unique, festive Shabbat Shira musical service, featuring the Or Shalom T'filah band and the congregational choir, will be held on January 30, at 7:30 p.m. The service, which will celebrate peace and justice, is open to all.

In addition, other classes and events also are being held, including a current events discussion on Wednesday, January 7, at 10 a.m. in the temple library. Anyone interested can bring in an article or topic (Jewish or not) to discuss with this lively group led by congregants. Although the event is free of charge, RSVPs are requested. Call 847-362-1948. The group also meets on March 4 and May 6.

Is clutter an issue? For anyone overwhelmed with the amount of "stuff" around the house who would like to feel more organized, plan to listen to professional organizer Bonnie Hillman Shay on Thursday, January 8, at 7 p.m. at the temple. Shay will share tips and techniques to pare down the clutter and insights on how to better organize what is kept, as well as how to maintain the newly organized spaces going forward. Get unstuck and refocused using her techniques while overcoming organizing challenges. RSVP to Joan at sisterhood@orshalomlc.org by January 6.

Ever question the role of prayer? Join Rabbi Nina Mizrahi in a lively conversation as she uncovers the gems of inspiration hidden in the words of the prayer book. These conversations are held on Thursday mornings from 10 to 11:15 a.m. and Thursday evenings from 7 to 8:15 p.m. on January 15, February 12, March 19, April 9 and on May 14. The fee for non-members is $18. Please call the temple at 847-362-1948 to register or with any questions.

For anyone under- or unemployed, Or Shalom's Job Networking Group's monthly meetings feature speakers who can provide information to help hasten the process and ease the frustration. Learn to sharpen networking skills, learn about available resources and how to more effectively market one's skills. Meetings are held as a community service monthly on Wednesday evenings from 7 to 9 p.m. free of charge. The first meeting of the new year will be held on January 28, 2015, and will feature Shalom Klein discussing "Effective Networking Tools and Techniques.' Klein, the founder of the Jewish B2B Network, has successfully connected himself across the county, including into the White House. Subsequent programs include Iris Seeley from College of Lake County on February 25 and Katy McGuiness from Harper College on March 25. Join a Sisterhood book discussion at the temple on Thursday, February 5 at 7:30, as the discussion will feature Susan Jane Gilman's book The Ice Cream Queen of Orchard Street.
