Arctic cold, snow to hit suburbs starting today

Just in time for kids returning to school after a snowless and mild holiday break, temperatures will nose-dive in the suburbs, forecasters say.

“Winter is finally arriving,” National Weather Service meteorologist Jamie Enderlen said.

Rain will turn to snow overnight, with parts of northern Cook County expected to see 1 to 3 inches into this afternoon, according to the weather service.

If you're traveling, conditions “will be a little messy,” Enderlen cautioned. Farther north, along the Wisconsin border, closer to 3 to 4 inches should fall.

By tonight, wind chills will plummet down to 15 to 25 degrees below zero as a large arctic, high-pressure system moves into the suburbs.

“This is going to last into Monday morning when kids are going back to school,” Enderlen said.

The high Monday? A balmy 14 degrees, forecasters say.

Then get out the shovel for one of the first major accumulations of the season. The weather service is calling for 4 to 6 inches Monday night.
