Meteorologists: Chicago snow lovers need not fret
Last month was one of the least snowiest Decembers on record in Chicago, but meteorologists say that's not necessarily an indication of what's to come.
The National Weather Service says historical data going back to the late 1800s does suggest there's a higher than average chance of finishing the season with a below-normal snowfall total, given the minimal amount of snow so far.
But it says it's also likely that at least one of the upcoming winter months will see above-average snowfall.
Chicago only got a trace of snow this December, tying with December of 1889 and 1912 for least snowiest. The December average is 8.5 inches.
Since October, the city has gotten 2.9 inches.
Up to an inch of snow is possible Saturday for parts of northern Illinois.
