Capitals to honor late Clint Reif by wearing 'CR' decal

In a move that puts the class in Winter Classic, the Capitals will be wearing a 'CR' decal on the backs of their helmets during today's game as a tribute to former Blackhawks assistant equipment manager Clint Reif.

"We certainly appreciate the consideration and thinking of Clint in a real tough time," Hawks coach Joel Quenneville said. "The trainers throughout the league and the support that's been shown to the organization and to the family has been outstanding.

"So it's one more show or one more way of expressing what he meant and the type of guy he really is."

Sun factor:

The forecast today in Washington calls for sunny skies and temperatures in the mid-40's.

Great for the fans on hand, but maybe not so good for the players, especially the sunny part.

"I think we have come up with a little bit of a solution, if it is a little bit bright, we'll probably switch ends or something like that at the 10-minute mark." Washington coach Barry Trotz said. "Chicago and us have been talking about a possibility of that.

"So, I think it will be fine. It will be, if it stays gorgeous, like it was today, it will be a great game tomorrow."

Going for three:

Kris Versteeg is the only player in league history to score goals at Wrigley Field, Soldier Field and the United Center.

He's looking to add Nationals Park to the list today, and Patrick Sharp doesn't doubt that Versteeg will do just that.

"It was pretty funny; before the Soldier Field game he was telling everyone how he always scores in outdoor games, and sure enough, he scores in that one, too," Sharp said. "You can pretty much chalk him up for a goal (Thursday)."

Words of wisdom:

Joel Quenneville was asked what advice he would give a young player experiencing an outdoor game for the first time.

"First of all, enjoy it," he said. "It's a special opportunity. We should all feel fortunate to get to participate in one of these events in your lifetime.

"You go back to your younger days when you're thrilled to be playing outdoor hockey in a rink or on a lake or a pond.

"When you're out there playing on New Year's Day, let it go. Enjoy it."

He said it:

"I think it's fair. If they wanted to stay in one end, if it's really glary, they can. I'll take the shaded area."
