Palatine wraps up winning effort at York
Finally, some breathing room for Palatine.
The Pirates wrapped up a 3-1 performance in York's Jack Tosh Holiday Classic on Tuesday with a 66-50 victory over Elk Grove. Each of Palatine's three previous tournament games had been decided by a point.
Balanced scoring and an efficient offensive effort were among the keys for Palatine (9-4).
Chris Macahon led the way with a game-high 19 points, finishing 7-for-11 from the field with five 3s and 4 steals.
Jovone Stricker finished with 13 points and shot 5-for-5 from 2-point range along with contributing 3 assists.
Also scoring in double figures for Palatine were Matt Ulrich and R.J. Smith, with 11 points apiece.
Palatine managed to shoot 51 percent from the field as a team and committed just 10 turnovers while forcing Elk Grove into 21.
Joey Gatziolis led Elk Grove with 8 points and Tyree Howard had 7.
The Grenadiers, who finished 2-2 in the tournament, managed to shoot 8-for-15 from 3-point range but struggled from 2-point distance (10-for-27).
Palatine took command by outscoring the Grens 25-6 in the first quarter.
WW South 61, Schaumburg 54: In a game that was tied after three quarters, Wheaton Warrenville South had the better finish to wrap up a 2-2 tourney effort.
Matt Dacy-Seijo led the Tigers with 17 points on a perfect shooting performance which included 5-for-5 from 3-point range and 2-for-2 at the foul line.
Brendan Parker and Aaron Kline paced the Saxons with 11 points apiece, as Schaumburg managed to shoot a terrific 59.4 percent from the field.
WW South was even better, though, making 21 of 28 shots (75 percent) and outscoring the Saxons at the free throw line 10-2.
Jason School and Eric Rushing both had 3 assists for Schaumburg, which finished 1-3 in the tournament.
Rolling Meadows 55, McHenry 51: Jared Murphy scored a game-high 18 points to help the Mustangs pick up a tournament victory in their final opportunity to get one.
John Lothery got all of his 12 points from 3s, and Jack Schoessling finished with 11 points.
The Mustangs were sharp at the free throw line, making 11 of 12 attempts, and limited their turnovers to 6 while forcing McHenry into 14.
at Pekin
Hersey produced a 26-point fourth quarter, but it was a case of too little, too late in a 61-57 loss to Freeport in the second round of tournament play downstate.
Josh Mailloux led Hersey with 17 points, Joe Coffaro had 13 and Payton Haas 10.
In their late game Tuesday against Peoria Richwoods, Hersey earned a 64-60 victory.
It didn't look good early, as Richwoods jumped out to a 19-4 lead after one quarter. But the Huskies put together three terrific scoring periods to finish, and held Richwoods to just 10 points in the fourth quarter.
Coffaro canned five 3s and finished with a game-high 20 points, and Haas had 15 points to go with 4 assists. Zak Cooper contributed 8 points and a team-best 7 rebounds.
The Huskies meet Mt. Carmel at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday in their tournament finale.
