Fire causes damages to Palatine hotel

Guests at a Palatine hotel were forced to evacuate their rooms Monday night due to a fire that started in a first floor elevator equipment room, officials said Tuesday.

According to a news release, firefighters were called to the Holiday Inn Express Hotel, 1550 E. Dundee Road, at 7:26 p.m. When they arrived five minutes later, they found smoke coming out of the equipment room. Smoke was also visible in the first floor lobby and on all the floors above the fire area.

Dry chemical extinguishers and water from a fire hydrant were used to put out the fire. Officials said the fire was under control by 7:40 p.m. Firefighters stayed on the scene afterward to ventilate the smoke and gases.

Officials said all the occupants in the six-story, 160-room hotel exited the building safely. No injuries were reported. Occupants were allowed to return after the smoke cleared and the hotel has remained open.

Firefighters from Arlington Heights, Buffalo Grove and Long Grove helped with the efforts.

Damage estimates are not available, but the building's elevators remain out of service. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
