'Gunfire' at mall was really clanging pot

Police say a weekend incident at a South suburban mall where some shoppers believed they heard gunfire turned out to be the clanging of a pot near the food court.

In a Monday statement, Chicago Ridge police say a Chicago Ridge Mall employee "had banged a very large metal pot three times to disperse the crowd" gathered in front of a business.

Chicago Ridge Mayor Chuck Tokar said over the weekend that he couldn't confirm shots were fired and police officers didn't find any weapons. He said there were no arrests or injuries reported.

He tells the Chicago Sun-Times that the mall was "jampacked."

Multiple police departments helped evacuate and search the mall. The mall closed Saturday evening but reopened Sunday.
