Master Gardener presents tools and tips for BodySmart Gardening

This winter, join University of Illinois Extension to become a "BodySmart" Gardener, and find out how you can prevent aches and strains and make gardening more enjoyable.

Presented by award-winning DuPage County Master Gardener Jan Hanson, the "BodySmart Gardening" workshop will focus on techniques to prevent injury while working in the yard.

Hanson will demonstrate sensible movements for gardening work - as well as provide participants with hands-on experience with new products and ergonomic tools - all designed to keep horticulture both safe and fun.

"BodySmart Gardening looks at how we garden and provides some simple tips to help protect the gardener's body from wear and tear," said Sarah Fellerer, Master Gardener Program Coordinator in Kane and Kendall Counties. "BodySmart Gardening covers both tool selection and proper use of the tools to minimize muscle strain while maximizing the tool's intended use."

Hanson - who has been gardening for 27 years, and an active Master Gardener since 2007 - also will cover warm-up exercises, correct clothing to minimize health concerns, and poisonous plant information.

University of Illinois Extension will host "Body Smart Gardening" at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 21, at the Kane County Extension office in St. Charles. There is a $10 fee for the class and registration is required.

To sign up by Jan. 16, visit the "Register Online" section on the website at web.extension.illinois.edu/dkk/.

If you need a reasonable accommodation to participate, notify at least two weeks prior to the class. For questions, call (630) 584-6166 or contact program coordinator Sarah Fellerer at fellerer@illinois.edu.

University of Illinois Extension provides educational programs and research-based information to help Illinois residents improve their quality of life, develop skills and solve problems.
