Judson kicks off new year with visiting artist lecture

As part of Judson University's School of Art, Design, and Architecture Spring Lecture and Exhibition Series, visual artist Sergio Gomez will present a lecture at 4:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 23, in Herrick Chapel, 1151 N. State St., Elgin.

A reception in the Draewell Gallery at Harm A. Weber Academic Center will follow at 6 p.m. Both events are free and open to the public.

Each year the School of Art, Design, and Architecture invites professional artists, designers, and architects to visit the Judson University campus to display and lecture on relevant topics to the programs within the school. The lectures and exhibits are designed to complement classroom curriculum and promote discussion and engagement among students regarding art, design, faith, and culture.

Gomez wears many artistic hats. He is owner and director of the Chicago-based fine arts gallery, 33 Contemporary Gallery, and is director of exhibitions for Zhou B Art Center. Gomez founded VisualArtToday.com, a curated online archive of international contemporary art, and is a creative marketing consultant and magazine contributor. Along with his wife, Dr. Yanina Gomez, he co-founded 3C Wear, an initiative that provides local, low-income schoolchildren with school supplies and uniforms. Additionally, he is an art/design faculty member at South Suburban College.

Gomez's work has been included in solo and group exhibitions regionally and internationally, and his pieces can be found in collections at the National Museum of Mexican Art and Brauer Museum of Art, among others.

His artwork is will be on display here in the Draewell Gallery from Friday, Jan. 23, through Wednesday, Feb. 25.
