Southern Indiana woman charged in abandoned dogs case

JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind. - A southern Indiana woman faces animal abuse charges for allegedly abandoning two dogs in an apartment, leaving one to die and the other to nearly starve to death.

Twenty-nine-year-old Ashley Copson of Jeffersonville was charged Monday with two felony counts of torturing or mutilating a vertebrate animal and two misdemeanor animal cruelty counts.

J. B. Ogle Animal Shelter director Sarah Green tells the News and Tribune officers found the starving dog in October curled up to a puppy that had died in Copson's apartment.

Green says the surviving dog was days away from death, but eventually recovered.

That dog was later adopted by one of the veterinarians who treated him and Green says he's "now in a home with a wonderful family that has children that he just adores."
