Celebrating the seasons in photos

Each week's DuPage County Neighbor section includes at least one entry in our Photo Finish photography contest.

Our photo staff picks some of its favorite submissions to run each week and then one overall monthly winner.

This week's entries all celebrate the change of seasons.

For Mark Sand of Wheaton, that included taking some out-of-town visitors to see the Fabyan Japanese Tea Garden in Geneva. Sand says it was the last week the garden was open this season and, as you can see, it provided a colorful setting for his picture.

Maggie Newlin of Naperville traveled a little farther for her picture, capturing the image at the marina on Washington Island in Wisconsin. "It was," she said, "one of the most beautiful sunsets I have seen."

Finally, Angela Cichosz of Carol Stream found her image outside her home on Halloween morning.

"Snowflakes were heavily falling," she said. "I walked outside with my macro camera setup and searched for a decent surface to capture a snowflake photo. However, the snowflakes were too wet and melted almost instantly upon impact. I then realized that my plaid shirt made the perfect surface to photograph a snowflake. I waited until a snowflake landed on my left sleeve, and then took the photo one-handed."

If you'd like to submit a photo for our contest, email it in .jpg format with at least 300 dpi resolution to dupagecontest@dailyherald.com.

Include your name, address and a phone number, plus a description. The monthly winner will receive a $50 gift certificate, good at PJ's Camera, Pickwick Place Plaza, 662 Roosevelt Road, Glen Ellyn.
