Longtime Chicago alderman Stone dies at 87

Former longtime Chicago Alderman Bernie Stone has died.

Chicago Jewish Funerals' Skokie Chapel says a funeral service will be held at noon on Tuesday.

One of Stone's daughters, Ilana Feketitsch, tells the Chicago Sun-Times (http://bit.ly/1sQRmjB) that her father died at a suburban hospital early Monday from health problems after a fall over the weekend. He was 87.

Feketitsch says her father loved his job and serving people.

Stone served in the City Council for nearly 40 years, representing a ward on the city's North Side.

During his tenure, he was known for being outspoken, particularly against late Chicago Mayor Harold Washington. Stone was a Democrat but briefly joined the Republican Party in the 1980s.

He lost his council seat in 2011 to Debra Silverstein.
