Nearly 100 million expected to hit the road, head to airports

Nearly 100 million Americans are expected hit the road, head to airports and climb aboard trains during the holidays.

A national spokeswoman for the AAA motor club, Julie Hall, says 91 percent of the 98.6 million travelers will be getting to and from home by car. Six percent, or 5.7 million people, will fly.

Hall says it's hard to know which day over the next two weeks will be the busiest travel days. That's because Christmas and New Year's Day fall on Thursdays this year, so travelers have more options about when to start their journeys.

The AAA says travel by car is likely to increase more than 4 percent this year compared to last. Hall says that's at least partly due to lower gas prices.

Holiday travelers could see rain, snow
