Geneva blitzes Streamwood

If the Geneva Vikings had to play without top scorer Janie McCloughlan for a period of time, they picked a good week to do it.

Host Geneva (9-0, 5-0) tuned up for the upcoming Montini Christmas tournament by cruising past Streamwood 58-33 Friday night for its ninth straight victory to start the season.

The Vikings played with McCloughlan, still recovering from a concussion, on the bench while nailing down another Upstate Eight River victory. The senior forward will miss Saturday's game against Elgin, but is expected back next Friday, when the Vikings play St. Joe's at Montini, Geneva coach Sarah Meadows said.

Senior forward Abby Novak scored a team-high 10 points and sophomore center Grace Loberg added 9 to lead Geneva. Both did most of their damage in close to the basket.

But this game was never close. Geneva rolled to a 23-10 lead after one quarter and enjoyed a 34-16 halftime lead.

To add insult to injury, Geneva held Streamwood (4-7, 2-3) scoreless in the third quarter.

But Sabre guard Cayla Hawkins scored 10 of her game-high 16 points in the final quarter for Streamwood. The Sabres' 17-point fourth quarter was one point more than it scored in the first three quarters.

"It was nice that everybody got in, and it was a week in which a lot of girls got in to the games," Meadows said of her team's easy wins over Glenbard North and Streamwood this week.

"We put in some new plays to work on, so that was good, but we have a tournament coming and I would have liked a little more competition this week," she added.

Jenejha Williams had a game-high 6 rebounds for Streamwood, while Stephanie Hart led Geneva with 5.

Geneva's defense forced 26 Streamwood turnovers in the game.
