Shriners, University of Illinois sign agreement

Associated Press

CHICAGO - The Chicago Shriners Hospital and the University of Illinois health system have signed an affiliation agreement.

The organizations announced the partnership Thursday.

The Chicago Shriners Hospital serves children in the Midwest with specialized orthopedic care, rehabilitation and cleft lip and palate repair. It's one of 22 Shriners hospitals in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

University of Illinois Health is a public health system based on Chicago's West Side. It includes UI Hospital, Children's Hospital University Illinois, an outpatient care center and 13 federally qualified health centers in Chicago.

Leaders of both organizations say the affiliation will expand care to more Chicago-area children and provide more training opportunities for residents and medical students. Shriners Hospital has been a training site for UI Health's orthopedic residents and other trainees.
