Theft report leads to drug arrests in Palatine

Two men were charged with drug possession after Palatine police responded to retail theft report.

About 3 p.m. Thursday, officers were dispatched to True Value Hardware, 790 W. Euclid, for a report of a retail theft in progress.

A store employee told them that men entered the store and stole a solid brass torch from a display case.

A store employee attempted to stop one of the men, Thomas P. Ignoffo, 20, of the 800 block of Freeman Road of Hoffman Estates, and got into a scuffle, police said.

The second man, Andrew R. Bergner, 20, of Bozeman, Montana, fled the store and was spotted by officers, police said. Bergner was caught after a short chase, and police said they found a bag of marijuana in his possession. .

In addition, officers searched Ignoffo's vehicle and discovered a bag of methamphetamine, police said.

Bergner was charged with one count of possession of cannabis and posted bond.

Ignoffo was charged with retail theft, battery, resisting arrest and possession of a controlled substance. His bail was set at $5,000 Friday. His next court date is at 10:30 a.m. Jan. 9.
