Viciedo's days with White Sox appear to be numbered

The White Sox have been adding some sizable salaries since November, signing free agents Adam LaRoche, Zach Duke, David Robertson and Melky Cabrera and trading for Jeff Samardzija.

Now that Cabrera is the new left fielder with a three-year, $42 million contract, look for the Sox to trade Dayan Viciedo. Eligible for salary arbitration, Viciedo is expected to make roughly $4.5 million in 2015.

Seattle was rumored to be the top destination for Cabrera. Now, the Mariners might try to get Viciedo.

"I don't think it behooves us to get very deep into any conversation about any specific player in terms of potential future moves," said White Sox general manager Rick Hahn. "I will say that there's certainly an opportunity for Viciedo to play a role on this club, however the amount of (at-bats) for him have certainly diminished.

"I don't think it would be a great shock to hear from other clubs that perhaps have a larger role for him and have interest in him joining their club to fulfill that role."

Viciedo had a .231/.281/.405 hitting line with 21 home runs and 58 RBI last season.

Another apology:

Melky Cabrera apologized to his San Francisco teammates and Giants fans after testing positive for using testosterone in August 2012 and being suspended 50 games.

Cabrera repeated his message Tuesday after officially signing with the Sox.

"That was in 2012," he said through a translator. "I feel sorry about my decision that I took it. But it's all behind me, and the only thing I want to do is play baseball, and I'm doing it."

North vs. South:

Jeff Samardzija is fired up about being back in Chicago and pitching for the White Sox after breaking in with the crosstown Cubs.

Samardzija is from Valparaiso, Indiana, and was a Sox fan as a kid.

"Obviously, they're both hungry," Samardzija said of White Sox and Cubs fans. "The White Sox obviously won the title a handful of years back (2005), and I think that's eased the yearning a little bit and it was exciting.

"I know for myself that it was exciting to watch as a fan and I think you see the same hunger on the North Side with those fans, too.

"Obviously, loyalty is never a question with the fan bases. I think all the difference comes from what hat your father put on you when you were a little kid and what jersey you chose to wear, whether it was a Ryne Sandberg jersey or a Frank Thomas jersey growing up. I think it's that simple."

Sox sign Penny:

The Sox signed pitcher Brad Penny to a minor-league contract and invited the right-hander to spring training.

After sitting out the 2013 season, Penny pitched for the Miami Marlins last season and was 2-1 with a 6.58 ERA in eight games (4 starts).
