Believe Project: $100 to help sister who lost home in Thanksgiving fire

Today's winner of a $100 bill through the Believe Project is Joanne Gurion of Rolling Meadows.

Here is an excerpt of her pitch:

"My sister, Nancy Maynard, was preparing Thanksgiving dinner when she realized that there was a fire in her garage. "Nancy gathered her two children and escaped as flames engulfed the house. Her husband, Jim, a 10-year volunteer fireman in Genoa, rescued Nancy as she ran back into the house attempting to save the family's beloved pets.

"They stood outside, barefoot and shivering, watching in disbelief, as their home burned to the ground, along with all their possessions and treasured memories. "They're living in a rental house, sleeping on air mattresses, grateful to have survived, but really in need of help."

• The Believe Project is awarding $100 each day in December to a different person with a good idea for how to use $100 to do a good deed for someone else. Email us 100 words or fewer (include your name, address and hometown) to specialevents@dailyherald.com.
