Three challengers file to run for Barrington village board

A slate of three challengers filed candidacy paperwork this week for the Barrington village board, which has three seats up for grabs in next year's election.

As of Tuesday afternoon, none of the three incumbents - Robert Windon, Paul Hunt and Jim Daluga - had filed for re-election.

Among the candidates filing Monday was Mike Kozel, who in 2013 ran an unsuccessful write-in campaign against Village President Karen Darch. Kozel challenged Darch after his nominating petitions as a trustee candidate were disqualified, keeping him off the ballot.

Joining him Monday were JoAnn Fletcher, who also was blocked from the 2013 ballot, and Maureen E. Yates.

Kozel, a Barrington-based businessman, said he and his running mates would bring a different perspective to the board.

"I have over the last four or five years been very interested in Barrington and its economic prospects and some of the political moves that have been made," he said. "I feel like I would be a good contributor to the growth prospects."

Candidates have until Monday, Dec. 22, to file nominating papers for the April 7 election.

Windon, who was elected to the board 2011, said he plans to seek a second 4-year term. Daluga and Hunt could not be reached for comment.

Windon said he was proud of the work the village board has done to make Barrington better,

"The restructuring of the fire department has really helped residents and downtown commercial development is taking off," he said.

Filings in the other Barrington-area communities include:

• In North Barrington, Village President Albert Pino filed for re-election. Pino, who previously served on the village board, was first elected mayor in 2011. All three trustees whose terms will be up in 2015 also filed for re-election. They are Pete Boland, Janice Sauer and Lawrence Weiner. A challenger, John Schnure, also filed Monday. Schnure has been a trustee twice before, first from 1997 to 2001 and from 2005 to 2007.

• Six candidates filed for the three trustee positions in Lake Barrington. The list includes four challengers - Lou Incandela, Christopher Pearson, James C. Thompson and Agnes M. Tomasian - and incumbents Andrew Burke and John Schaller. Village President Kevin Richardson is not up for re-election.

• No candidates have yet submitted paperwork to run for village trustee in Barrington Hills or Deer Park.
