Jury arrest warrant scam active in 23rd Circuit Court

A scam where residents get a phone call from someone saying they missed jury duty and that an arrest warrant has been issued has surfaced in the 23rd Circuit Court in Kendall County.

The scam is being perpetrated across the country, according to a Dec. 10 security information bulletin from the Illinois Supreme Court.

In the Kendall County scam, the caller said he was "Captain David Allen" from the "Federal Warrant Division." The caller also gave the name of a 23rd Circuit Court judge as the person who issued the arrest warrant.

In the scam, the caller tells the victim that in order to avoid getting arrested, he or she can pay a fine. The caller then tells the victim to get a "money pack," which is a type of prepaid credit card, and to call a certain phone number.

The victim then reads the numbers off the card to the caller, according to the bulletin.

Although it is unclear how prevalent the scam is in Illinois, officials said it is likely this scam may appear in other circuits in the state, according to the news release.
