Four candidates file for three seats in Island Lake

Four candidates filed for three seats on Island Lake's village board on Monday.

Incumbent Thea Morris will seek a second, 4-year term on the board.

Additionally, incumbent John Burke will run as a team with newcomer Sandy Hartogh and fire and police commission member Debra Jenkins. They'll be known as the People's Alliance, officials said.

Jenkins briefly served as treasurer of Mayor Charles Amrich's For the People campaign committee last year. She and her husband, Greg, made significant donations to Amrich's successful campaign in 2013, too.

Burke joined the board in August. He was appointed to replace Shannon Fox, who had resigned.

Morris and Fox were political allies who were elected in 2009. They routinely found themselves at odds with Amrich and his supporters on the board and in the community.

Morris was one of the three members of the electoral board that twice voted to remove Amrich from the 2013 ballot because of problems with his candidate application.

A Lake County judge overruled the board and let Amrich run. He won overwhelmingly.
