Buffalo Grove making more crime information public

On Jan. 1, the Buffalo Grove Police Department will launch an online Geographic Information System (GIS) to replace the existing police blotter.

Using the latest technology, the department will be able to provide information about calls for service and locations. As with all information collected by the police department, victim's rights and privacy regarding personal matters are respected, and the department will not jeopardize an ongoing investigation by releasing information.

The GIS public information system will be able to provide more information than is currently available in the blotter on the village website and makes access to information more user friendly. Users will be able to search by crime type, date, and/or location. Users will be able to see what is happening in the village, a neighborhood, street or specific address.

The police department will be hosting an informational session showcasing the GIS system and its capabilities at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 16, at the police department, 46 Raupp Blvd.
