Extracurriculars for the home-schooled

At Larkin High School in Elgin, home-schooled kids are not allowed to participate in extracurricular activities or have access to resources provided by public schools unless they are enrolled for a certain number of credit hours.

There are many benefits to being home-schooled, however children being home-schooled should not prevent them from trying out for their local high school football team, participating in an art club or even going to their junior and senior proms.

Parents who home-school their children pay the same amount of taxes which helps fund and support public schools, so why aren't their children able to be on the track team or play basketball.

Another reason this should change is the social aspect, since it would allow home-schooled kids to interact with and be around their peers.

Lastly, having access to resources such as counselors and career advisers will help home-schooled kids choose a career and be better prepared for college. Kids should not miss out on these things just because they are learning at home.
