Geneva scores 33 in 1st quarter of easy win

Geneva's girls basketball team put on a first-quarter clinic during Friday night's 64-38 Upstate Eight Conference River Division victory over visiting West Chicago.

Seven different players etched their names in the scorebook as the Vikings (7-0, 3-0) exploded out to a 33-9 first-quarter lead while shooting 74 percent from the field.

"I'm not sure of the last time that happened," Geneva coach Sarah Meadows when asked of the 33-point quarter. "We jumped on them right away and we wanted that."

Freshman guard Margaret Whitley fueled the fast start, canning her first 4 field-goal attempts - including a pair of 3-pointers - while directing the up-tempo Vikings' offense.

"She just looks more comfortable," Meadows said of Whitley, who scored 12 points and delivered 4 assists in limited playing time. "I think every game she looks more comfortable, maturing and growing. She's doing a nice job."

Whitley had plenty of support from her teammates, as Abby Novak also reached double figures with 12 points while Grace Loberg had 7 points.

Stephanie Hart and Eileen Burke added 5 points apiece for the Vikings, who visit St. Charles East today.

Geneva led 41-20 at halftime and 55-26 after 3 quarters.

Amari Stafford and Bria Williams scored 10 points each for the Wildcats (4-5, 1-2).
