Family of man shot in Wal-Mart to join DC march
DAYTON, Ohio - The parents of a 22-year-old Ohio man fatally shot by an officer while carrying an air rifle in a Wal-Mart plan to join a weekend march in the nation's capital to protest police violence.
Twenty-two-year-old John Crawford III was shot at the Beavercreek store Aug. 5 after a 911 caller reported someone waving a rifle. A grand jury decided the officer's actions were justified.
The U.S. Department of Justice is investigating the racially charged case. Crawford was black, and the responding officers are white.
An attorney for Crawford's family says they want to be part of what he calls a "national conversation on police misconduct." He says Crawford's parents will attend a Saturday march in Washington with relatives of others killed by police, including 12-year-old Tamir Rice of Cleveland.
