It's their right to choose not to vote

It's their right to choose not to vote

I could not agree more with the letter from Abraham Scarr, Director Illinois PIRG. We must strengthen our democracy, it certainly works best when everyone participates, although this has never happened and as a result we have been saddled with the likes of FDR, Eisenhower, Truman and JFK.

However, time marches on and the electorate of today is almost barred from the polling places. Absentee ballots, mail-in ballots, extended voting times and provisional ballots bar the common man from voting. I say let them register to vote whenever they want.

In fact I think they should be allowed to register and vote after the election. This way if they see their particular candidate has won they do not have to go to the polls and if their candidate has lost then they can cast a meaningful ballot in hopes of overturning the results of those who play by the rules.

They could hang their votes on their doorknobs and have the local Republican or Democrat or League of Women Voters, but I repeat myself, official come by and pick it up. Or maybe the people do not vote because they do not want to. That is also their right.
