Man charged with home invasion in Elgin

An Elgin man was charged with home invasion and residential burglary after he was found in possession of a stolen TV, Elgin police said.

Phillip Esparra-Colon, 28, of the 300 block of South Street, was arrested following an investigation after a call at about 8:15 p.m. Sunday to the 100 block of South State Street, Elgin Police Cmdr. Ana Lalley said in a news release.

The victim told police he was at home when he heard a knock on the door, answered, and was confronted by a man.

A struggle ensued, during which the victim said the man pointed what looked like a shotgun at him. The victim later determined the man was holding metal gardening shears, police said.

The victim, who suffered a small laceration to his hand, was able to push the man out of the home and lock the door. He heard glass breaking and contacted police. Two windows were broken and a TV was missing from the home.

Esparra-Colon was found in possession of the TV. Officers also located the gardening shears near the residence.

Esparra-Colon appeared in Kane County bond court Tuesday where his bail was set at $250,000. He is next due in court Dec. 17.
