Wisconsin DNR board to consider update invasives list

MADISON, Wis. - The state Department of Natural Resources' board is set consider the first revisions to the Wisconsin's invasive species list since it was created five years ago.

The DNR has proposed classifying 49 more organisms as prohibited, which means people can't sell, possess or transport them and must destroy them if they discover them on their property. The agency wants to list 32 other species as restricted, which means people can't sell or move them but can possess them.

One major change calls for downgrading the emerald ash borer's status from prohibited to restricted, a move that acknowledges the tree-devouring insect has become too widespread to eradicate.

The DNR's board is set to vote on the changes at a meeting Wednesday in Madison.
