Wheaton falls in national championship match

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The Wheaton College men's soccer team rallied but lost the NCAA Division III men's soccer national championship 4-2 to Tufts University.

Tufts won its first NCAA championship in men's soccer when the Jumbos gained a 3-0 lead early in the second half. Wheaton rallied to cut the Tufts (16-2-4) lead to 3-2, but a late goal by the Jumbos accounted for the final score.

Wheaton (22-4) is 2-3 all-time in the NCAA Division III final, and Wheaton's three runner-up finishes are tied for most in the division's history with Washington University of St. Louis.

The championship match was the final contest at Wheaton for coach Michael Giuliano, who announced in May that he was leaving to take a coaching and teaching position at Greater Atlanta Christian in Georgia.

"I am leaving the greatest group of guys I have ever coached and the best position I have ever had," Giuliano said.
