Sprinklers stop Naperville heater fire from spreading

A heater in an industrial building in Naperville caught fire early Friday morning, but authorities said a sprinkler system saved the day.

Naperville firefighters responded at 5:23 a.m. Friday to a fire alarm that activated at a building on the 2100 block of Corporate Lane, in an industrial area in the northwest part of town.

On the way to the scene, firefighters said, they were told a security guard saw smoke inside the building.

The first firefighters at the building found a hanging heater had burned inside the engineering room. But they said the unit was directly under a sprinkler head, which kept the fire from spreading throughout the building.

When firefighters shut off power to the heater, they eliminated the threat of any more fire breaking out. No one was injured and the fire was contained to the heating unit.

The Warrenville Fire Protection District assisted Naperville on the scene, while the Winfield and Lisle-Woodridge fire protection districts covered Naperville's fire stations during the response.
