Illinois man: Town should honor woman baseball pro

SADORUS, Ill. - A resident of a small eastern Illinois town wants to see the community honor the woman who helped inspire the lead character in the 1992 film "A League of Their Own."

Longtime Sadorus resident Victor Holiday says Dorothy "Dottie" Schroeder was "one in a million." Shroeder played for years in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League and is part of the inspiration for the character Dottie Hinson, played by Geena Davis.

The 88-year-old Holiday tells The News-Gazette in Champaign he hopes the town will erect a sign telling people Schroeder grew up in Sadorus. The town of roughly 400 is about 15 miles south of Champaign.

Village President John Deedrick said the town needs to erect the sign.

Schroeder is featured in a Baseball Hall of Fame exhibit.
