New HVAC Installer Technician Certificate offered at CLC

A new 18-credit, flexible Fast Track-HVAC Installation Technician Certificate is being launched by the College of Lake County's Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning Technology program in January 2015 (pending approval by the Illinois Community College Board).

Students can complete the certificate in just 16 weeks. Some coursework is completed online; hands-on learning component tasks and demonstrations are completed in the HVAC labs on campus.

Completion of the program prepares students for entry-level HVAC/R installation technician positions. The job outlook for HVAC/R mechanics and installers for the 2012 to 2022 period shows a faster than average growth (21 percent), according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Median pay for 2012 was $43,640 per year ($20.98 per hour).

During the 2015 spring semester, six courses will be offered from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Grayslake campus. Students who complete all six courses successfully will meet the requirements for obtaining the new certificate.

Three courses will be offered Jan. 20 through March 12, including: Basic Refrigeration Systems (HET 110-600), HVAC/R Electricity (HET 111-602) and HVAC/R Blueprint Reading (HET 155-600). From March 16 to May 14, students can enroll in Heating I, Residential Appliances (HET 130-602), Air Conditioning III, Installation and Service (HET 252-600) and Sheet Metal Fabrication (HET 251-600).
