Cemetery gateway restored for Lincoln reenactment
The entrance to Oak Ridge Cemetery in Springfield has been restored to its original appearance in time for next year's reenactment of Abraham Lincoln's funeral.
The reenactment is to take place in May, 150 years after the 16th president's burial.
The original wooden archway bearing the name of the cemetery had deteriorated. The (Springfield) State Journal-Register reports that it was replaced with one made of brushed aluminum textured to look like wood.
A ceremony was held Wednesday to dedicate the restored entrance on the east side of the cemetery.
Katie Spindell is chairwoman of the 2015 Lincoln Funeral Coalition that is overseeing preparations.
She says restoring the entrance will help ensure the historical accuracy of the reenactment.
