2 Sangamon County deputies hurt during arrest

SPRINGFIELD - Two Sangamon County sheriff's deputies have been hospitalized after trying to detain a combative driver wanted in an earlier hit-and-run.

The State Journal-Register reports Sgt. Dan Parrish says the 20-year-old driver began fighting with the deputies Tuesday as they escorted him to an ambulance after crashing into a utility pole in unincorporated Sangamon County.

Police officers from multiple departments responded to the deputies' radio calls for help. A woman who lives nearby says she called 911 after seeing the man punch a deputy in the head, causing him to fall to the ground.

The suspect was eventually taken into custody and transported to Memorial Medical Center. The deputies were also taken to the hospital.

Authorities haven't released the names or conditions of the people involved. Parrish says the deputies' injuries weren't serious.
