Elgin woman faces charges in stabbing case

An Elgin woman who police say stabbed a man during an argument at her house was taken into custody earlier this week after an investigation.

Jami M. Mercer, of the 600 block of North Liberty, called police on Nov. 28 and told officers that several people struck her in the face at her home and that she had picked up a knife and began swinging at her attackers, police said in a news release.

Police noted that she had no visible signs of injury to her face.

Later, police learned that a 20-year-old man sought treatment for a stab wound to his arm at Presence St. Joseph Hospital.

He said his friend got into a fight with Mercer and that he stepped between the two and got stabbed as a result, according to police.

Mercer was charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and aggravated battery causing great bodily harm.

She was taken into custody Monday.

A judge set her bond on Tuesday to $100,000.
